Nick Knight Exhibition

Today I visited Somerset House for the SHOWstudio- Fashion Revolution exhibition with my sister. I really enjoyed this exhibition and loved the way everything was done digitally, really bringing everyone into this new age of technology. The first digital piece within the exhibition is a huge statue of Naomi Campbell that stands 22 foot high, infront of you is a computer screen and a pen where you can select colours and shapes to draw over the body, and this is done immediately onto the sculpture (as shown below in my images). 'This is one of Nick Knights latest projects, a sculptural rendering of her body using 3-D scanning technology and rapid prototyping, creating a monument of the model as a cypher for our preoccupations and unwavering interest in the culture of celebrity.' 2009.

The layout of this exhibition kept me entertained and wanting to know more about each piece. I prefer this way of showing off work as sound, touch and sight are all the senses that keep you focused and curious as to what you are being shown, rather than focusing on one sense being sight. There were lots of exciting and new aspects to this exhibition that I thought were very clever, and a good way of connecting with the viewer. Below is more about the exhibition from the website, and the different areas that the exhibition covers including Process, Performance, Participation and Film.

I would recommend this exhibition to anyone interested in fashion, film or art in general. 10/10, it's inspiring!

'SHOWSTUDIO: FASHION REVOLUTION IS A RETROSPECTIVE OF NINE YEARS OF ONLINE INNOVATION, INVENTION AND CREATION.'

PROCESS

FROM ITS OUTSET, THE PHILOSOPHY OF SHOWSTUDIO.COM HAS BEEN TO DEMYSTIFY THE CREATIVE PROCESS. RATHER THAN OFFERING THE FINAL PRODUCT AS THE ACME OF CREATIVE PRODUCTION, SHOWSTUDIO.COM SEEKS INSTEAD TO EXPLORE THE PROCESS OF GETTING THERE. FROM THE ARTISTS’ INITIAL IDEAS AND INSPIRATION TO THE TECHNIQUES EMPLOYED IN ACHIEVING THE END RESULT BOTH EMOTIONALLY AND PHYSICALLY SHOWSTUDIO.COM REVELS IN THE ACT OF MAKING. BY SHOWING THE PROCESS ITSELF, IT ADVOCATES THAT THE COLLABORATIVE EFFORT IS AS IMPORTANT AS ANY PREMEDITATED IDEAS ON THE PATH TO CREATIVITY.

PERFORMANCE

SHOWSTUDIO.COM’S CHAMPIONING OF LIVE PERFORMANCE FASHION HAS PLAYED A CRUCIAL PART IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW KIND OF FASHION EXPERIENCE: THE FASHION FILM. FOR SHOWSTUDIO.COM, HOWEVER, THE EXPLORATION OF PERFORMANCE IN FASHION ALSO EXTENDS TO THAT OF THE PHOTOGRAPHER, DESIGNER AND STYLIST, AS WELL AS THE MODEL. INCLUDED IN THIS AREA OF THE EXHIBITION IS A PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIO WHERE EACH WEEK A LIVE FASHION SHOOT WILL TAKE PLACE, ALLOWING UNPRECEDENTED ACCESS TO THE INNER WORKINGS OF A PHOTOGRAPHIC SHOOT AND ALLOWING THE ‘PERFORMANCES’ OF EVERYONE INVOLVED TO BE OBSERVED AT FIRST HAND. BY PLACING THE STUDIO IN A ‘GLASS CASE’, SHOWSTUDIO.COM IS OFFERING ITSELF UP AS A LIVE GALLERY EXHIBIT TO BE ANALYSED.

PARTICIPATION

SHOWSTUDIO.COM ACTIVELY SEEKS TO PUSH THE INTERNET TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL TO MAKE THE EXPERIENCE OF FASHION AS EXCITING AND PROVOCATIVE AS POSSIBLE. THE IDEA OF DIALOGUE IS KEY, AND SHOWSTUDIO.COM’S COMMITMENT TO CREATING INTERACTIVE MEDIA THAT INVITES ITS AUDIENCE IN IS AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF ITS PROGRAMMING. THIS APPROACH DELIBERATELY STANDS IN OPPOSITION TO MOST EXISTING FORMS OF ART, WHERE THE AUDIENCE IS EFFECTIVELY MUTE, UNABLE TO RESPOND. BY ALLOWING THEIR AUDIENCE A VOICE AND OPENING UP THE WORLD OF HIGH FASHION IMAGE-MAKING TO QUITE LITERALLY EVERYONE, SHOWSTUDIO.COM HAS CREATED AN INCLUSIVE, COLLABORATIVE ENVIRONMENT THAT WELCOMES THE UNEXPECTED AND THE SPONTANEOUS; THE THRILL OF THE UNPLANNED AND UNREHEARSED CREATIVE RELATIONSHIP.

FASHION FILM

Fashion film is perhaps SHOWstudio.com's single most important contribution to the changing face of how fashion is experienced. From its earliest experiments with moving image, SHOWstudio.com has forged a crucial path to shaping and developing this new genre of film-making. SHOWstudio.com's extensive archive of fashion films demonstrates the representation of fashion at its most vital, engaging and revolutionary.
Among the many iconic portrait sittings and surreal fantasies was Sheena is a Punk Rocker, in which Kate Moss pogoes frantically on film, while in Yer 'avin a bleedin' larf, ain't cha? Simon Foxton demonstrates that fashion does have a sense of humour.
